Not only architecture enthusiasts and history buffs will enjoy a visit, but also nature lovers and romantics.

History

Built at the end of the 11th century as Schwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau Castle served the Knights of Schwangau. After multiple damages and reconstructions, Crown Prince Maximilian, the future King Maximilian II, acquired it in 1832. Enthralled by the location in the Allgäu mountains, he had the castle rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. From 1848, Hohenschwangau Castle served as a summer residence, and King Ludwig II spent much of his youth here, which shaped his fondness for magnificent buildings. Today, the castle belongs to the Wittelsbach Equalization Fund and is accessible as a museum.

An architectural gem

Hohenschwangau Castle features yellow facades, three round towers, and an unaltered Biedermeier interior. The banquet hall, the Hohenstaufen room, and the Orient room are particularly impressive. High-quality paintings tell the history of the castle. A walk through the Schwanseepark in the English landscape garden style, with magnificent nature impressions and views, completes the visit.
